Manuel Antonio and Quepos Gay & Lesbian Scene

Photo 1 of 3. Click to view slideshow.

Playita: The gay beach, over the rocks northwest of the main beach, continues to attract a gay following. This photo was from the days when the beach was undeveloped and so Playita was mostly gay and clothing optional. Now the beach is shared with a hotel which has been developed behind the beach.

The Manuel Antonio and Quepos area is the main area of interest for travelers interested in a gay scene at the beach. There has been a gay scene here for more than 30 years which makes it unique in Costa Rica. While its star has faded a little over the years as overdevelopment has tarnished some of the cherished areas gays have always called their own, like the gay beach Playita which now shares its space with a straight hotel. But it's still the only area in the country outside the capital with a gay bar, with exclusively gay hotels and a gay beach. So it remains a must-see destination for gay travelers who want to meet others.

If you need transport from San Jose to any of the Pacific Beach towns, there are regular buses to all as well as turboprop flights to most destinations. You can sell all the transport options between any two points in Costa Rica on our transport planner.

Playita Gay Beach

View on map

The gay beach, called Playita (or little beach) by all, is often spoken of for what it once was: an isolated little beach, surrounded by nature, clothing optional, with cruising behind the beach. Since the 2007 opening of a hotel directly behind the beach, the gay beach is now a section at the end of the beach beyond the hotel and the hotel has been known to call the police when nudity is seen. Public access to this beach is to walk west (away from the park) along Playa Espadilla and cross the rocks. This crossing is not safe within several hours of high tide so check the tide tables before you go and plan your coming and go accordingly.

My partner and I stayed at Makanda in December. Not gay-owned, but certainly gay-friendly. And gorgeous!

Hi from the owner of Casa Bosque Verde. Regarding nightlife Latino Lounge is not open. For a Bar "Mogambos" is the place. Located on the 2nd floor of Raphael's Terazza Restaurant. Mogombo's is busy for sunset - great view - and also from 8 to 11 at night, afterwhich the crowd goes to Liquid Lounge for dancing or goes home...

Thanks for the updates! Sad to see the final remnants of Tutu gone...many memories in that space! I've removed Latin Lounge from the map and added Mogambo.

What are people saying about us?La Mansion Inn / nice place and gay friendly     Adam from chicago, usa     June 30, 2011

My partner and I stayed at La Mansion Inn in Manuel Antonio and felt completely comfortable throughout our stay. While not a "gay" hotel, it is open and welcoming to all and the staff were all incredibly friendly (a few of them were also cute. smile.)

What are people saying about us?New 5 Star Resort in Manuel Antonio     Dennis from Manhattan, New York City     January 16, 2010

There is a new super luxury 5 star resort in Manuel Antonio called Los Altos Resort and Spa. It opened the end of Oct. It is right across the street from Cafe Milagro. It consists of 24 3 bedroom condos -2400 sq ft plus outdoor space and 4 4 bd penthouse. It is on 23 acres and has its own private beach. It is designed like a luxury loft in NYC, very clean, modern lines! Great amenities, gym, infinity pool, beautiful restaurant, beach club, etc. Very hi end with modern Balenese furnishings. FOR THE GAY CUSTOMER WHO IS LOOKING FOR LUXURY AND NOT THE USUAL GAY B AND B'S-doesn't apppeal to everyone. It is definately the most luxurious resort in Manuel Antonio. You should contact the manager to see if he is OK with you listing the resort as "gay friendly" on your website. I am sure he will-I have already had a conversation with him telling him to market to the high disposal income gay clientele. An apt sleeps 6 people and the penthouse 8. His e mail address is and the website is
